Aberdare National Park

This is a unique park found in 2 counties – Nyeri and Nyandarua. Its nearest town is Nyeri. With dense forests, 300m-high waterfalls and amazing hikes, this park is as much about the flora as it is the fauna. It is a dreamy destination with misty valleys, hills and mountains of the Aberdare Ranges. If you long for clean, crisp air and a break away from the busy city life, this is the ideal destination for peace and quiet. The mountainous scenery, awe-inspiring waterfalls, and a vast number of elephants are the major attractions in this park.

If you are chasing waterfalls, then Aberdare Park is the perfect destination. Billowing mist fills the air, the thundering roar of water fills your ears and a shower of spray fills your eyes as one of Kenya’s most famous waterfalls appears in front of you. Karuru Falls is a whooping 300m in height while the Gura waterfalls has a shorter drop on the opposite side of the same gorge. Here, you also get to enjoy the alluring sight of Chania waterfalls and Magura waterfalls, which cascade into the Queen’s Cave. Other attractions include the dragon teeth, which is a volcanic rock that’s akin to a set of teeth on a jaw and the twin peaks or towers that are outcrops formed due to volcanic activities.

Brimming with wildlife, rare wildlife species here include the black rhino, black serval, the rarely seen melanistic leopard and the Eastern Bongo (a large forest antelope). The blend of perfect scenery of a mountainous terrain and thick tropical forests enveloped in mist, this park is definitely a must-see in Kenya. Wildlife here includes elephants, leopards, warthogs, giant forest hogs, bushbucks, red duikers, Sunis, reedbucks, buffalos, giraffes, blue monkeys and elands.
