Lake Simbi is a small volcanic crater soda lake in Kenya located outside Kendu Bay and close to the shore of Lake Victoria. Both Lake Simbi and the Lake Victoria shore form the Lake Simbi National Sanctuary which is run by the Kenya Wildlife Service. ‘Simbi Nyaima’ in Luo means the ”sunken village” which aptly describes this amazing little volcanic lake.
The lake is saline and sulphurous which is believed to have curative properties with a distinct smell that goes for kilometers from the lake. Salt is also extracted from the basin and is sold for different uses. With its size and saline nature, this also means that it attracts flamingos and other birds such as little grebes, little egrets and Egyptian geese
